Action month for environment protection launched

 - The national action month for environmental protection kicked off at a ceremony jointly held by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Lao Cai provincial People's Committee in the northern mountainous city of Lao Cai on June 4.

The ceremony was held in response to World Environment Day (WED) on June 6.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung emphasised that the Party, State and Government have always paid special attention to environmental protection, conservation of biodiversity, and adaptation to climate change, which are specified in a number of documents such as Resolution No. 41/NQ-TW of the Politburo on the environmental protection in the period of accelerated industrialisation and modernisation; Resolution No.24/NQ-TW of the Party Central Committee on active response to climate change, enhancing resource management and environmental protection.

Deputy PM Dung asked ministries, sectors and localities to strengthen the capacity of State management on environmental protection, enhance inspection on issues related to the environment; as well as promote the role of social-political organisations and local communities in monitoring the implementation of environmental legislation.

According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), in 2016, World Environment Day calls for everyone to 'Go Wild For Life'. Driven by UNEP, UNDP, UNODC and CITES, the newly launched campaign aims to tackle the illegal trade in wildlife, and showcases how this crime erodes precious biodiversity and threatens the survival of a range of species.

The main activities of the WED to be held in Lao Cai province include a live broadcast of the launching ceremony ‘Action Month for Environment’ in Lao Cai city; releasing wild animals; tree planting at Hoang Lien Son National Park; and a seminar themed ‘The role of Vietnam Veterans in biodiversity conservation and protection of endangered species in Vietnam’.

In addition, a series of activities will also be launched in Hanoi including the National Forum on Environment and Development; the review of ‘Action Month for the Environment’; and a jogging program called ‘Vietnam Green Journey’./.
