Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) and energy investors in Laos have just signed the memoranda of understanding on the developing Nam Yeuang hydropower project cluster, Nam Neun 1 hydropower project and Nam Phan coal-fired thermal power project (TPP) for selling electricity from Laos to Vietnam in period after 2024.

At the conference on development cooperation between the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) of Vietnam and Ministry of Energy and Mines (MOEM), and Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) of Laos in 2017, the sides discussed the projects of bonded warehouse and oil pipeline from Hon La harbor (Quang Binh, Vietnam) to Kham Muon (Laos) and My ly – Nam Mo I Hydropower plant. Especially, the two sides have been unanimous to study the 500 kV grid project for Vietnam to import electricity from Laos.

The 220kV Xekaman1-Pleiku2 transmission line in Vietnam’s territory, which transmits electricity from Laos to Vietnam, became operational on April 12, according to the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT).

Laos Government should consult Mekong River Commission (MRC) on the construction of a new hydropower project which is projected to begin late this year, said Vietnamese senior state officials at a recent press conference of the 2nd MRC Summit 2014 in Ho Chi Minh city.

On the occasion of the 42nd Session of the Vietnam-Laos Joint Committee on bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and Laos held in Hanoi in the first days of January 2020, Mr. Tran Tuan Anh, Minister of Industry and Trade received and worked with Mr. Khammany Inthirath, Lao Minister of Energy and Mines and then the Ministers witnessed the signing ceremony of the power purchase agreements (PPAs) between Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) and Lao Phongsubthavy Group, and between EVN and Chaleun Sekong Energy Co., Ltd.

According information of Vietnam News Agency, on April 27, at the headquarter of Lao Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), Representative of the Government of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) and Mr. Pham Ngoc Long - Director of the Long Van Limited Company of Vietnam signed a contract for the search, exploration and exploitation of coal in Sam Nuea district, Houaphanh province.

Information from the General Department of Customs shows that in the first 8 months of 2017, Vietnam exports coal to almost all markets increasingly in comparison with that in the same time of the last year. It is particularly noticeable that coal export to Laos market increased for 16 times by amount (50,455 tons) and 15 times by value (4.32 million US$).

In Hanoi, Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan - General Director of Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) just had a meeting with Mr. Peck Khamkanist - CEO of Impact Electrons Siam (founder of Monsoon - Laos wind power project).

In order to speed up the procedures for deploying investment in developing power projects (power plants and grids) for electricity importation from Laos to Vietnam, recently Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) directed a mission of EVN National Power Transmission (EVN NPT) headed by Mr. Nguyen Tuan Tung, NPT chairman to have working meeting with a number of the investors of power projects in Laos.

Information from the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) said: On the morning of June 28, in Hanoi, under the witness of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and General Secretary, Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, EVN General Director Tran Dinh Nhan attended the ceremony to exchange power purchase agreement (PPA) between EVN and hydropower investors in Laos.

In the framework of the Vietnam - Laos conference 2019 on development cooperation for Industry and Trade, for Energy and Mine, Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam Tran Tuan Anh  has had a talk with Minister of Energy and Mine of Laos Khem-ma-ni Phôn-sê-na and signed important documents of the cooperation.

A project to install two 500/200kV-450MVA transformers as well as 500kV power distribution devices at Pleiku 2 transformer station in Ia Kenh commune, in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai’s Pleiku city, were put into operation on June 10.

The Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC) has just had a working meeting with the Southern Laos Power System Management Board (under Laos Electricity Corporation - EDL) on content related to power grid transformation in Quang Tri province from 35 kV to operation in 22 kV voltage level and re-signed the power purchase agreement between EVNCPC and EDL

On the afternoon of July 20, 2023, at the headquarters of Viet nam Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), The Minister Nguyen Hong Dien and Minister of Lao Energy and Mines Phosay Sayasone signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation in the coal field. This is an important event, marking a new milestone in the energy cooperation relationship between the two countries.

On March 31, 2022, in Hanoi, Power Project Management Board 2 held a ceremony for signing contracts for 2 packages of power transmission project from Laos to Vietnam.
