New wind and solar projects continue to dominate recent global capacity increases. But when dispatchable power is required, particularly in developing countries, coal remains the fuel of choice for utility-scale plants. Global coal use for power generation continues to rise primarily due to rapid growth of the Indian, African, and Asian power markets that value low cost solid fuels.

Ukraine’s national utility Energoatom and the U.S.’s Westinghouse Electric Co. intend to sign a nuclear fuel supply deal for three reactors of the country’s nuclear power plants. ROSATOM raises concerns: this decision can jeopardize safety of the plants. Experts addressed the situation with Ukraine’s refusal to use Russia-made fuel at the plants built by the Russian specialists at the forum-dialogue “Atomic Energy, Society, Safety.”

On 12/12/2018, the first long-term coal contract for power projects between Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industries Holding Joint Stock Corporation (Vinacomin) and Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) was signed. On the occasion, Mr. Trinh Dinh Dung, Vice Prime Minister said: “this event confirmed the message "no coal shortage for electricity generation, no electricity shortage for economic development".

According to Mr. Dang Hoang An, General Director of Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), with the increase in domestic coal prices for electricity production and updating the input parameters such as the prices of imported coal, oil, gas and exchange rates in comparison  with parameters used for calculation in plan of the first 9 months of 2016, the total power generation and business costs of EVN will increase about VND 7,230 billion in 2017.

A fuel cell laboratory inaugurated at the Vietnam National University-HCM City Laboratory for Nanotechnology on September 21 is expected to help sustainable rural development by producing highly efficient fuel-cell technologies to generate electricity from bio-waste.

In Hanoi, Deputy General Director of the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) Nguyen Tai Anh recently had a working meeting with the Electricity and Energy Group (PEWG) under the Vietnam Business Forum (VBF) on the cooperation in energy transition.

“The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) has made consultancies with the ministries, sectors on converting fuel from import coal to liquefied natural gas (LNG) for Long An 1 & 2 Thermal Power Projects (TPP) for reporting the Prime Minister to put them into the Power Development Planning (PDP) VIII” Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh informed.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) has just issued a document proposing the investors of coal-fired power plants develop a fuel conversion plan. Specifically, converting coal fuel to biomass fuel and ammonia when the power plant has operated for 20 years. And proposing to develop a plan to stop operation when the plant has operated for coal power plants that cannot convert fuel, or do not capture CO2 when the plants have operated for 40 years.

The Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) informed that, on August 3, 2022 in Hanoi, Mr. Hoang Quoc Vuong – PVN Chairman and Mr. Le Manh Hung – PVN General Director had working meeting with Mr. Kim Sung Won - General Director of GS Energy Company (Korea). At the working meeting, the Korean partner proposed to support PVN and the Vietnamese Government to use blue ammonia (green ammonia fuel) for gradually replacing coal fuel in power generation.

The Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) informed that the increase of fuel prices lead to EVN power generation and purchase costs increased by more than 16,000 billion VND over the same period in 2020.

According to the assessments of the SSI Joint Stock Company, in 2019, the unstable supply due to the shortage of coal and gas the capacity and generation of many thermal power plants (TPPs) were reduced. In 2020, to ensure the fuel supply, it is likely that the power sector must increase coal imports, and at the same time receive a new mechanism for solar power prices to encourage investors.

The Thien Phu biomass fuel briquetting plant project is invested by the Hue VINGO renewable energy JSC has been issued investment certificate by the Department of Planning and Investment of Thua Thien - Hue province.

Doosan Engine announced on January 13 that it recently completed the development of the Generation X engine, which offers exceptional efficiency and fuel consumption performance to provide a favourable Energy Efficiency Design Index(EEDI). Furthermore, the improvement in fuel consumption, when compared to conventional marine engine options, results in correspondingly reduced CO2 and NOx emissions.
