The Government has told relevant agencies to consider stopping new coal-fired power plant projects as domestic coal reserves are falling and the country will have to import coal, possibly from 2020, to keep its thermal power plants running.

The conference on the operation and production of coal-fired power plants in the Northern region has just been held by Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) on the afternoon of June 19, 2023. There were 24 investors of coal-fired power plants in the Northern region in attendance, including the Power Generation Corporations 1, 2, 3 (EVN member units), Vinacomin Power Corporation, PetroVietnam Power Corporation, BOT investors and the investors of the independent power plants.

On March 25, in Binh Thuan, Deputy General Director of Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) - Nguyen Tai Anh chaired a conference to "promote the ash and slag sale at EVN's coal-fired power plants".

Under the guidance of the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Hoang Trung Hai, the coal-fired thermal power plants (TPPs) that are in the investment preparation should be only allowed for starting construction if there are the clear waste (ash and slag) handing plans, or the contracts in principle with the demand companies.

On October 5, in Hanoi, the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) and the Japanese JERA Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation towards the goal of de-carbonization.

Specialists from the National Research Institute for Mechanical Engineering - NARIME (Ministry of Industry and Trade) have successfully researched, designed and made a rotary heat recovery air dryer for boiler in coal-fired thermal power plant.

Afternoon of July 31, 2017, at the Government House, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc received Mr. Tran Nghia Long, Chairman of  Kaidi Duong Quang New Energy Group and Mr. Tuong Vinh Kien, Vice General Director of Hoa Dung Asset Management Company Ltd (Hong Kong of China) who are visiting Vietnam to deploy investment cooperation. At the meeting with Prime Minister (PM), Chairman Tran informed, that Kaidi group is investing in thermal power prọects (TPP) in Vietnam and intends to expand investment activity in this sector.

Prime Minister has accepted the proposal of Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) to correct the coal-fired thermal power projects in Adjusted Power Planning VII by adjusting the capacity of An Khanh project (in Bac Giang province with an old name as Luc Nam) from 100 MW to 650 MW and supplementing an independent project (IPP) of 100 MW (2x50 MW) for electricity supplying Duc Giang Chemical Joint-Stock Company (Lao Cai province) without connection with national power system.
