BSR has successfully processed Sokol crude oil

 - Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR) informed: Dung Quat Oil Refinery has just finished the successful test processing Sokol crude oil - marking an important milestone in diversifying crude oil with stable quality for Dung Quat Oil Refinery.

From July 13 to 18, 2020, Dung Quat Oil Refinery Plant implemented test processing Sokol oil with a mixing rate of up to 20%. With flexible operating mode, when processing Sokol oil with a rate of 20% by volume, and increasing the volume of other oil, the rate of Bach Ho crude oil decreased to about 29%. The experimental results show that it is possible to gradually replace Bach Ho crude oil, which decreases in output and quality.

According to the initial assessment, when operating at 109% capacity at the Crude Oil Distillation Shop, the mixture between Sokol and other oils gives Jet-A1 product with a quality to meet the technical parameters. Due to that Sokol oil contains a lot of sulfur, BSR has to increase the capacity of the Sulfur Recovery Shop 2 (SRU2).

In addition, when processing Sokol oil at a high rate, there is a risk that the SOx emission exceeds the allowable limit, so in processing Sokol oil it is necessary to calculate and control SOx emission content in exhaust gas for absolute ensuring environmental regulations.

For processing test Sokol oil, BSR negotiated with oil owners to buy the first lot of Sokol oil with a volume of 71.0574 barrels, and imported SPM float in early July 2020.

For processing the test crude oil lots, in April 2019, BSR used WTI Midland (USA) crude oil with a volume of about 995,000 barrels, and at the end of October 2019 used the Bonny Light (Nigeria) crude oil with a processing rate at 50% by volume at 107% of CDU capacity and 100% of RFCC capacity.

The successful processing Sokol test crude oil is good news for BSR before entering the 4th overall maintenance campaign of Dung Quat Oil Refinery plant and in the context that the Company is actively looking for crude oil sources with a good price, high production and quality equivalent to Bach Ho crude oil (except for sulfur standard) to gradually replace domestic crude oil sources.

It is known that Sokol oil has been exploited by the Russian Federation for many years, with preliminary reserves of about 2.3 billion barrels and a production of about 250 thousand barrels/day.
