USTDA funded EVN to study development of the gas power projects in the Southern Vietnam -

On May 22, in Hanoi, the United State Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) signed an agreement on USTDA fund of US$ 1.4 million for EVN to implement the project "Technical support for studying development of the gas power projects in Southern Vietnam".

Mr. Daniel Kritenbrink, the US Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Vietnam and Mr. Duong Quang Thanh, the EVN Chairman sign the agreement on funding the project "Technical support for studying development of the gas power projects in Southern Vietnam".

Speaking at the signing ceremony Mr. Daniel Kritenbrink, the US Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Vietnam said: One of the top priorities of the US Government is to support countries and partners, including Vietnam, to fulfill the target for guaranteeing the world energy security. The Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam has approved the project "Technical support for studying development of the gas power projects in Southern Vietnam" and allowed EVN to receive the fund from USTDA.

According to Mr. Duong Quang Thanh, the EVN Chairman: The project is expected to provide electricity industry in Vietnam in general, EVN in particular the overall assessment on the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market for electricity generation, the potential positions for building the complexes of gas power plants using LNG and solving a "problem" on selecting locations, technology for importing LNG dock warehouses and making the feasibility study reports for selected locations in the Southern Vietnam.

Especially, the project will contribute to solving the difficulties and challenges of Vietnam's national power system at the rick of power shortage in the Southern Vietnam in the coming period, as well as to ensuring national energy security.

According to the Power Development Planning VII (revised project), in order to meet the power demand increasing by a growth rate of more than 10%/year and develop the power plants with a total capacity of 130,000 MW up to 2030, Vietnam needs to add new power plants including thermal plants by coal and by gas which require to ensure fuel supply, especially imported LNG for gas power plants in the southern region.

The demand for importing LNG mainly for gas power plants in the period of 2021-2025 will be expected as 1- 4 billion m3/year and in the period of 2026-2035 as 6-10 billion m3/year.

Mr. Todd Abrajano, Deputy Director of USTDA and Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan, General Director of EVN sign a witness of the Funding Agreement signing.

In recent 10 years, EVN received from USTDA: the technical supports on information technology, researching wind power project development and the most recent project as "Technical Assistance for researching and developing energy storage system in Vietnam". Besides, USTDA also organized two-way trade exchange missions on learning about the technological capacities and opportunities for cooperation in developing the smart power grid, improving the efficiency of the power plants and technology on using LNG etc. ...
