Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) and energy investors in Laos have just signed the memoranda of understanding on the developing Nam Yeuang hydropower project cluster, Nam Neun 1 hydropower project and Nam Phan coal-fired thermal power project (TPP) for selling electricity from Laos to Vietnam in period after 2024.

December 6, 2020, in Hanoi, on the occasion of the 43rd Session of Vietnam – Laos Intergovernmental Committee under the witness of Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan – EVN General Director and the investors of the power projects in Laos signed the memoranda of understanding (MOUs) on selling electricity from Laos to Vietnam, including:
1 / MOU between EVN and Phongsubthavy Group on developing Nam Yeuang hydropower project cluster, with a capacity of 84 MW, expected to sell electricity to Vietnam from 2024 - 2025.
2 / MOU between EVN and Kong sup Hydro Development of Nam Neun 1 and Nam Neun 3 on developing Nam Neum 1 hydropower project with a capacity of 124 MW, expected to sell electricity to Vietnam from 2025.
3/ MOU between EVN and Phongsubthavy Group on developing Nam Phan coal -fired TPP with a capacity of 300 MW, expected to sell electricity to Vietnam from 2025.
The policy of buying electricity from the Nam Neun 1 hydropower Project and the Nam Yeuang hydropower project cluster mentioned above has been approved by the Prime Minister. In the coming time, the two sides will promote the negotiation of PPAs under the direction and guidance of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The signing MOUs on developing power projects this time has marked a significant step forward in the friendship between Vietnam and Laos, especially in energy cooperation.
