In necessary case, Vietnam will hire a floating power station

In necessary case, Vietnam will hire a floating power station -

In the case that the thermal power projects in southern region continue to delay, it is possible to consider hiring the floating power stations with a capacity range from 30 to 620 MW, power purchase agreement from 3 to 10 years for ensuring power supply to the South.

According to the Report of the National Steering Committee on Power Development, by 2030, the capacity of LNG power plants will be 12,750 MW (excluding the old gas plants switched to using LNG), of which 6,000 MW has been planned in the PDP VII (adjusted) including Nhon Trach 3 and 4 (1,500 MW), and Son My 1 and 2 (4,500 MW) projects.

In PDP VII (adjusted), the Kien Giang Thermal Power Project (1,500 MW) planned to use gas from Block B, but due to gas volume from Block B being sufficient only for O Mon Power Center, so if developing the Kien Giang project must use LNG. The location and the way for LNG supply may be reviewed and in necessary case it is must find another Favorable location for replacement.

Therefore, in period of 2026-2030, the total capacity of LNG power projects must be added to the PDP is 6,750 MW.

Besides, due to exhaustion of gas sources in the Southeastern region, the existing power plants as Phu My, Ba Ria, Hiep Phuoc with a total capacity of about 4,200 MW will be gradually switched to LNG use from 2021.

For Hiep Phuoc power plant, the Steering Committee proposed to add 3 units with a capacity of 270 MW each together with existing 3 units by 125 MW each, that in result there will be a power plant with a total capacity of 3(270 + 125) = 1185 MW using LNG and sell all its generation to power system from the end of 2022 for reducing shortage level in the system.

The National Steering Committee on Power Development also proposed to consider LNG power projects in the North for replacing Hai Phong 3 and Vung Ang 3 coal thermal.

Regarding solutions to ensure power supply in the short and medium terms, the Steering Committee asserted that, beside the Bac Lieu LNG power project that has been added to the PDP, it is necessary to consider supplementing to PDP the LNG power projects such as Long Son, Ca Na which the Ministry of Industry and Trade is reporting to the Prime Minister for approving.

In the case that the power thermal projects in the South continue to be behind schedule, to ensure power supply to the region, it is possible to consider hiring the floating power plants.
