55 coal strata have been identified in the mainland part of the Red River coal basin

 - At the conference to review the plans in 2016 of Ministry of Resources and Environment, the Vietnam Geology and Mineral Department informed “At present, there have been identified 55 coal strata placed in 5 stratum groups from the surface to the depth of 1200 meters in mainland part of the Red River coal basin”.

This is the result of the project “Overall investigation, assessment of coal resources in the mainland part of the Red River coal basin” implemented from 2012 on a total investigating area of 2,760 km2 in territory of Thai Binh (1,521 km2), Hai Duong (435 km2), Hung Yen (398 km2), Nam Dinh (272 km2), Hai Phong (106 km2) and Ha Nam (33 km2) provinces. The tasks of the project are to identify geological structure containing coal and other minerals, sediment layers containing coal and coal strata; to assess coal resources and other mineral potential…

According to Vietnam Geology and Mineral Department, among recovered coal strata there are 40 strata with a thickness of over 1 meter, 13 strata with a thickness of over 3 meters and 2 strata with thickness of 8.6 -10 meters, which were seen in some of boreholes.

The coal strata with a thickness of over 1 meter lie at depths of 379-1044 meters. At a lot of boreholes, especially in the Pacific coastal areas outside the breakwater, the depths to contact coal are shorter than predicted.

The analyzing results showed the good quality of the recovered coal as: low ash (averagely 13.26%), high calorie (averagely 6,890 cal/g), large volatile (averagely 48.15%) and low sulfur content (averagely 1.54%).

At present, Vietnam Geology and Mineral Department and Institute of Geology and Mineral Science in cooperation with US Wyoming University implemented an experimental research on the underground coal gasification technology to orient the activities for surveying, effective using and environment protecting coal in Red River Delta.
